I was lucky enough to be on a panel yesterday at the CNN iReport Awards, talking about storytelling. The experience reminded me of the many reasons I love-love the work iReporters do.
Here are two examples:
These messages of hope for escaped slaves in Mauritania reaffirmed my belief that stories do have the power to create change and to move people in a way that is meaningful and important. Thanks to everyone who sent in these messages. It was so humbling and inspiring to watch them come in:
And here’s “Walk in Our Shoes” project, which shows the power of collective storytelling. The group is stronger than its parts. Love all of these submissions, and I got to meet a couple of the submitters this weekend, which was awesome.
Went to a super-fun wedding in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, last weekend. Crossed off three new states on that trip: Washington (still haven’t been to Seattle, but we flew into Spokane), Idaho and Montana. All beautiful and worthy of return visits for sure. Everyone wears plaid in these parts.
Glaciers are in the middle of that mountain. The banded strip of snow is covering one. Moose = invisible without binoculars. Thank you to the older gentleman wearing blue-and-white-stripe, train-conductor-style overalls for lending me his.
Went to Montana’s Glacier National Park last week. It’s gorgeous and changing fast. Scientists say all glaciers will have melted by 2030. Blame climate change for the speediness of their disappearance.
The Blue Ridge Mountains are gorgeous, and so is the Blue Ridge Parkway, which snakes through North Carolina and Virginia. I biked/camped along the better part of it with a friend right after college. Went hiking here yesterday, near Asheville, NC. It’s gorgeous and really accessible. Highly recommend it.
At the Tinariwen — band from Mali — show last night at Variety Playhouse in Atlanta. This guy’s dancing was probably the most memorable part … followed closely by the guy wearing a turban and playing a shiny red guitar, and another guy who was playing an enormo-gourd as a drum.
